Despite debuting in 2016 to a relatively lukewarm reception, in the years that followed the unit has actually been steadily building an impressive library of incredible experiences. We’ve had our hands (and heads) on the device for a little while now, so here are ten of the best PSVR games we’ve experienced so far.

1. Astro Bot

Astro Bot isn’t just a great virtual reality game, it’s a great video game – period. In fact for many, it’s one of the best of 2018. It’s innovative, imaginative and arguably the closest you’ll ever get to playing a Nintendo-styled platformer on a PlayStation device. By leveraging the virtual reality system, Astro Bot creates worlds that exist all around you – a creative feat that to this day is disappointingly under-appreciated.

2. Beat Saber

Think Star Wars meets Guitar Hero – the general concept of Beat Saber is simple. You use your Move wands like a sword, swiping and slashing at coloured boxes that rush towards you in time to the beat of a music track. It’s fast, it’s frantic and it’s a ridiculous amount of fun. Before long you’ll simultaneously feel like a Jedi master who is in serious need of a shower. Make no doubt about it – on harder difficulties, Beat Saber is a tremendous workout of the best kind. The PSVR option might lack the ability to bring in a more modern playlist like the PC iteration, but this game should be at the top of your list all the same.

3. Tetris Effect

Tetris Effect is already a truly special game worthy of a place in any gamer’s collection. Playing it in VR becomes an even more immersive experience as lights and effects flash and explode all around you. Plug in a good set of headphones, slip on PSVR and prepare for one of the most peaceful, transcendent video games you will ever play.

4. Falcon Age

Sure, you don’t need PSVR to play Falcon Age, but you’d be doing yourself a major disservice if you didn’t. Falcon Age ditches quick bombastic action dizzyingly large setpieces that’ll have your head spinning to focus on a simple bond between you and your bird. The experience that creates is equal parts charming and endearing – an impressive achievement for first-time developer, Outer Loop Games

5. Resident Evil 7

What makes a scary horror game even more terrifying? How about by throwing you into the action as one of the main leads. Navigating Resident Evil 7’s creepy environments is sufficiently tense and the inevitable jump scares are all the more powerful. Our advice: bring an extra pair of pants.

6. Blood and Truth

Only recently released, Blood and Truth avoids prior pitfalls and presents one of the most developed experiences on the platform. From the moment you slip on your headset, you take control of Ryan Marks, an elite Special Forces agent who must save his family from the clutches of a violent crime lord. That means you’ll be reloading your weapons, picking locks, disarming bombs – all with your own hands. This is the game that’ll show you how far the technology has come.

7. Creed: Rise to Glory

Always thought you had what it takes to get in the ring and embrace your inner Rocky but could really do without all the bruises? Creed: Rise to Glory is just the game for you then. A tie-in to the rebooted Creed film series starring Michael B. Jordan, you’ll star as the titular lead and do your best in seven fights to win the ultimate championship belt. The game isn’t without its flaws, but it presents a rare opportunity to feel the pressure and adrenaline of the fight the way few games can.

8. Trover Saves the Universe

Perfect for those seeking a bit of light relief, Trover Saves the Universe is pure screwball mayhem in the best ways, as you try to save your dogs from a lunatic named Glorkon who has stuffed them into his eye holes and is using their life essence to destroy the universe. Expect laughs aplenty as you journey to a wide range of bright, colourful and creative worlds.

9. Skyrim

Skyrim is the gift that keeps on giving. Originally released way back in 2011, the open-world epic has since been ported to almost every platform imaginable. But if you’re planning on re-entering Bethesda’s magical world, doing so in VR is the way to do it – granting the opportunity to live out your own Game of Thrones fantasies and do battle with a deadly dragon. Our advice though: ditch the Move controllers for this one and play with a DualShock 4.

10. Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted

We’re not entirely sure how Five Nights at Freddy’s became something of a phenomenon, but Help Wanted will surely help continue that trajectory. It’s unsettling, intense and will do your best to keep you up at night. Plus, by smartly collating both classic and original mini-games into the one package, it helps keep things chugging along without feeling stale. This is a great one to pull out with some friends.
