The Block 2022 star Sarah-Jane received a text message to confirm her double mastectomy just a day before this year’s auction took place.
Sarah-Jane revealed that she is a BRCA1 gene carrier, which means she has a far greater chance of developing breast cancer than those without the gene. The reality star went ahead with the double mastectomy just days after the house that she and Tom renovated was auctioned off on TV.
“Essentially, I had a double mastectomy on Thursday, because I’m a BRCA1 gene carrier, so I have the BRCA1 gene mutation,” the 30-year-old shared on her Instagram stories on Sunday.
She added, “It means that I have quite a high percentage – like an 85% chance – of developing breast cancer. And, in my case, my mum got breast cancer first at 36, so there’s a really high chance of [me] getting it while I’m still quite young.”
“I’ve been on this waitlist for 5+ years, and then the day before The Block auction they called me, and they were like, ‘we’ve got a spot for you’.”
Fortunately, the surgery went well, and Sarah-Jane told her followers that she had breast implants put in straight after her natural breasts were removed. She shared an update about her recovery on Instagram.

“It is day five since my double mastectomy and I’ve got my compression bra on which they asked you to wear afterward. Um, so I had all my breast tissue removed and then I got implants put in straight away.”
She continued, “And these are my drains, which are all nice and healthy. I have a nurse that comes and visits every day and just checks them. They’re draining all fluid out so that I don’t have heaps of swelling. I’ve got some bruising. But, it’s all going pretty well, to be honest.
“I do have nipples for people asking. They were able to save my nipples. Not everybody’s nipples are salvageable.”
