The trailer for season 4 of Netflix’s The Crown dives deeper into the unhappy marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles.

Setting the tone for one of this year’s most anticipated show arcs, Netflix dropped a gripping trailer for Season 4 of The Crown today.

Fans have long known that the upcoming season will dive into the unhappy marriage of Princess Diana and Princess Charles against the backdrop of the Thatcher era. The trailer, however, hinted that the larger focus is going to be on Diana and Charles.

“Here is the stuff of which fairytales are made,” the trailer begins. “A prince and princess on their wedding day. But fairytales usually end at this point with the simple phrase, ‘They lived happily ever after.'” The irony, of course, is not lost on us.

While Emma Corin — who teased the upcoming season with a photo of herself in a replica of Princess Diana’s iconic wedding dress — steals the proverbial show, we also get glimpses of Gillian Anderson as Margaret Thatcher. While other new cast members have yet to make an appearance, Olivia Colman cuts an imposing figure as Queen Elizabeth.

Helena Bonham Carter reprises her role as Princess Margaret, while Tobias Menzies’s Prince Philip seems to be battling a distance between himself and his wife. Season 4 also stars Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, and Stephen Boxer as Dennis Thatcher.

While Season 4 was going to be the penultimate season for the show, creator Peter Morgan confirmed earlier in July that there would be a sixth season, owing to the need to dive deeper into the same time period.

Season 4, however, will be the last we see of Colman playing the world’s longest reigning monarch. Imelda Staunton is set to play Queen Elizabeth from Season 5, with Elizabeth Debicki playing Princess Diana.
