The curious How I Met Your Mother spinoff has set a January release date so we won’t have to “wait for it” much longer.

Hulu confirmed on social media today that How I Met Your Father will premiere on January 18th, 2022. They shared a short clip featuring some of the cast, who all sound very excited about their new show.

And why wouldn’t they be? With 00s icon Hilary Duff getting the role she’s always deserved and Kim Cattrall recently announced as a recurring guest star, everything is set up for the HIMYM spinoff to be a success. Oh, and the Josh from Drake and Josh, Josh Peck, also has a recurring part, which probably isn’t being talked about enough.

How I Met Your Father reverses the roles of its predecessor. In the near future, Sophie (Duff) tells her son the story of how she met his father: the story then takes the viewer back to 2021, where Sophie and her close group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.

Duff shared her excitement about landing the lead role earlier this year. “I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie,” the actress said when her casting was revealed in April.

“As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter (Bays) and Craig (Thomas) would trust me with the sequel of their baby. I realize these are big shoes to fill and I’m excited to slip my 6 ½’s in there!”

As cool as a cast led by Duff and rounded out by Samantha from Sex and the City sounds, there’s a small part of me that will always wonder just how good Greta Gerwig’s original spinoff version could have been. We probably wouldn’t have got Lady Bird though, so swings and roundabouts.
