I think it’s safe to say that everyone has attempted to bake banana bread at least once during self-isolation. The sumptuous, nutty loaf has proven to be the global Achilles heel of everyone under lockdown. It’s been really heartwarming watching people flock to Instagram stories to share their baked goods. Though I think we need to be more critical about the standard of banana bread that we give kudos to.

It’s truly hard to cock up a banana bread. It’s the ultimate useless person baking experience. Like you’re literally using bananas that you forgot to eat to conjure up the dish. My timeline has been poisoned by a series of truly unacceptable slabs and it’s time that we asked more from the people. I know that there is a nationwide shortage of everything, but if your banana bread isn’t embellished with walnuts, make banana pancakes. The only people that get a nut-free banana bread pass are anaphylactic’s but I expect them to perhaps add a textured brown sugar crust, or a decorative slither of banana to give the beast some spunk.

If you think you’ve got banana bread down pat then I have brilliant news for you. Australian Bananas is on the hunt for the best banana bread, they’re inviting aspiring bakers across the country to subject their loaves for criticism.

The competition will be running in celebration of National Banana Day on May 1st. A day that celebrates Australia’s favourite fruit and supports Australian banana growers. Side note, of course banana’s are a Taurus fruit.

To enter the competition, head to the Australian Bananas Facebook or Instagram page and upload an image of your banana bread creation, along with a 25-word description. Tag your posts with  #NationalBananaDay2020 to be entered into the running to win the Banana Bread Bake-Off title and an Australian Bananas prize pack.

I know that there are endless think-pieces about how we shouldn’t put too much pressure on ourselves to achieve anything during isolation. Though I’d argue that if you come out of all of this without the Banana Bread Bake-Off title then you should spend the rest of your life hanging your head in shame.
