The new Tom Holland movie Cherry is quite the departure for Spider-Man, seeing him play a drug-addled bank robber.

AppleTV+ released the trailer yesterday, January 14th, and it looks like a wild ride. The story follows Holland as a disillusioned Army medic who becomes addicted to opioids and soon finds himself having to rob banks to pay for his new drug habit.

The trailer starts pleasantly enough, showing Holland’s character falling in love with a girl before the horrors of war upend his entire existence. The kinetic footage then shows his slide into drugs and danger in what’s sure to be a thrilling conclusion.

The movie is an adaptation of Nico Walker’s 2019 novel of the same name. Both movie and novel are semi-autobiographical, Walker having spent time in the Army during the Iraq War.

The movie sees Holland reunited with his Avengers directors the Russo brothers (who also directed many episodes of both Community and Arrested Development in a hilariously varied filmmaking career).

Ciara Bravo, Kelli Berglund, Thomas Lennon, Jack Reynor, Michael Gandolfini, and Jeff Wahlberg co-star.

AppleTV+ will be hoping the star power behind and in front of the camera will help make Cherry a success. Of the five original movie titles they’ve released so far, one has yet to be a breakout hit for the tech giant, Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks arguably being the most notable one to date.

Even their TV programming has struggled. Prestige series The Morning Show struggled to find an interested audience, despite boasting both bloody Jennifer Aniston and Steve Carell as lead actors. If Rachel and Michael Scott can’t save your show, you’re really up against it.

The movie is scheduled to be released in cinemas first, on February 26th, before debuting around the world on AppleTV+ a few weeks later on March 12th.
