Australians are waking up to fantastic news this Friday, as the dribs and drabs from the current San Diego Comic Con spread to our corner of the world. That news being the highly coveted Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick has released a trailer and to be perfectly honest with you, it looks fkn siiiiick.
Not a lot has changed in the life of our beloved hero Maverick in the past 33 years since Top Gun was first released. Top Gun 2 sees the fighter pilot still in his cockpit, and still hauling ass like it’s no one’s business. Despite clearly being a loyal serviceman for three decades, the film appears to focus on friction between Maverick, once again played by Tom Cruise, and Navy Top Brass, embodied by the stone-cold grimace of Ed Harris. We also know the film was directed by TRON (Legacy)’s Joseph Kosinski.
Apart from some wild cinematography, mind blowing CGI and the probability that that is legit Tom Cruise behind the controls of a fighter jet, the trailer also reveals the inclusion of Jon Hamm, Glenn Powell, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller who is believed to play the son of Goose, and Monica Barbaro who’s character Phoenix will be soaring high alongside Maverick.
Plot points are few and far between, allowing for plenty of speculation – Will the move address the fate of an outdated, ageing navy pilot struggling to find his place in a world of drones and automation? Who will the enemy be? Is Goose’s son also playing ‘You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling’ in a bar just like his dad did in the original? We can only hope.
We’ll have to wait until it’s 2020 release date to know for sure, but either way, this trailer has all of us here feeling the need…the need to see Top Gun: Maverick.
