Have you been hanging out for a scary music-related TV series ever since the Aussie version of Popstars wrapped up in 2002? Well, there’s good news in the pipeline, with word of a new show on the way about a killer vinyl record.
Yes, Deadwax is a new eight part miniseries that mixes in horror with your average murder-mystery, and is set to premiere at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, on Sunday.
Sadly, the new series is set to air on Shudder, a horror-based streaming service which is not yet available in Australia, but you shouldn’t rule out the service making an Aussie debut sometime soon.
Created and directed by Graham Reznick, Deadwax actually appears to take on more of a serious tone than the subject suggests, with the official synopsis posing the question, “What if the vinyl itself could cause harm just by putting the needle to the groove?”
“A young woman is pulled into a murder investigation revolving around a curious vinyl record which has driven those who possess it mad, and killed anyone who dared to listen to it,” it continues.
Taking its name from that area between the centre label and the last groove of a record, the series will also explore urban legends surrounding music, including the practice of backmasking – that is, putting hidden messages in music by playing them backwards.
While we’re doubting it’ll put you off the idea of chucking on a record on a cosy night in, it’s definitely sounding like something that will appeal to fans of horror and music alike.
The official trailer for Deadwax also dropped today, and shows the series as a rather well-produced affair that is rather heavy on the jump-scares. Give it a watch below, and be sure to keep the lights on for this one!
