The news that Netflix was making a sequel to 2020’s zeitgeist-grabbing hit Tiger King was met with approval by most but Carole Baskin wasn’t one of them.
As Variety reports, one of the series ‘stars’ is now suing Netflix for using her footage in the upcoming Tiger King 2. Documents they obtained reveal that Baskin and her husband, Howard, filed the lawsuit in Tampa, Florida, on Monday, November 1st, against both the streaming platform and production company Royal Goode Productions.
Baskin believes that the continued use of her footage constitutes a breach of contract because they supposedly only signed appearance release forms for the first doc.
The sequel is called “odious” in the lawsuit document, with Baskin and her husband expressing their surprise at finding out the footage of them was used in the trailer for it (see below).
“By utilizing the film footage of the Baskins and Big Cat Rescue secured by Royal Goode Productions under the Appearance Releases in ‘sizzle reels’ and promotional trailers for the sequel entitled Tiger King 2, the Defendants are in breach of the terms of the Appearance Releases,” it reads.
According to the documents, then, the Baskins are asking for all footage of them to be removed from the sequel, with the pair seeking to take the case to a jury. Good luck finding a human being who doesn’t have a prior opinion about Tiger King to be on that jury.
Baskin has been very vocal about her dislike of the sequel before, previously saying, “I wouldn’t call Eric Goode or Rebecca Chaiklin true documentarians. I mean that was just a reality show dumpster fire.”
