Google has released an emergency update for Google Chrome Stable Stable on March 25. According to Google, the update patches a security issue that is currently being exploited.
This update will bring the Stable version of the browser to version 99.0.4844.84.
This update is considered unusual, as it addresses only a single security vulnerability. This is a testament to how serious Google is taking this current exploit.
In a Chrome stable channel update announcement, Google confirmed it “is aware that an exploit for CVE-2022-1096 exists in the wild”.
All chromium based browsers, including MS Edge and Brave, also need to be updated to protect from this security issue.

The update is currently available for all supported desktop systems, and Google notes that it will automatically roll out to all devices “over the coming days/weeks”. If you have Chrome and wish to speed up the process to ensure maximum security, here’s how you can do it:
- Open any version of your Chrome browser.
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner of your browser.
- Click settings
- On the left menu, click About Chrome
Google Chrome displays the version that is installed on the page. An update check is run, and if Chrome finds an update, it will download and install it. Chrome will then prompt you to restart your browser.
The announcement post on the official Google Chrome Releases blog provides some information on the vulnerability that has now been patched.
The update fixes a single security issue that is classified as High. High is the second highest rating after Critical.

Chrome users should install the update as soon as possible to protect the browser and their data against attacks targeting the issue.
