Despite months of speculation, the reviews for Pokémon Legends: Arceus have arrived and the results may surprise you.

If you’re a die-hard Pokémon fan, it’s been a tense few months. Despite being announced just shy of a year ago, Nintendo has been shockingly quiet about Pokémon Legends: Arceus. That was concerning because the game promised everything fans of the pocket monsters had been clamouring for. There was the giant open world, a new catching mechanic and a general vibe that felt a hell of a lot like Zelda Breath of the Wild. In essence, Pokémon Legends: Arceus looked to completely rework the Pokémon formula for the first time in over a decade.

It talked a hell of a talk, but with such radio silence nobody knew if it would walk the walk. Well fear no more, gamers, because the reviews are in and they are overwhelmingly positive.

According to Press Start, “…While Sword and Shield brought some new ideas to the table, Legends: Arceus serves as a solid jumping off point for future entries in the franchise. While it might not provide the visual fidelity and exploration we might wish for in an open-world-esque Pokémon game, it does provide a satisfying and addicting gameplay loop, alongside a surprisingly enjoyable narrative to boot.”

GameSpot was equally positive but did point out some of the game’s technical limitations stating “The world is presented similar to Breath of the Wild, but Legends: Arceus’ distinctly separate zones don’t quite match the sprawling openness of that Zelda game. They’re still rather large, and it captures that same sense of wonder, but it’s not the same level of an impressive technical feat.

“Pokémon Legends Arceus also seems to be straining against the technical limitations of the Nintendo Switch at times (I played on a Nintendo Switch OLED), even among these smaller environments. Pieces of world geometry pop in and out somewhat regularly, and bodies of water and the sky show telltale texture repetition that’s hard not to notice. It’s a testament to the quality of the game that those issues only slightly detracted from my enjoyment.”

Needless to say, if you’re a Pokémaniac, it’s a wonderful time to be alive.
