Last week we brought you the news that the iconic 90’s movie, The Bodyguard, star vehicle for Whitney Houston, was being remade. Now, her ex-husband Bobby Brown has spoken out against the decision.
They must have known that people would be against remaking such a beloved movie. Of course TMZ decided to see what Whitney’s controversial former partner Brown thought about the remake, catching him while he was leaving LAX airport on Sunday, September 19th. After the cameramen asked him if he thought the planned remake was a bad idea, Brown was blunt with his response: “Yeah,” was all he simply said, making his feelings clear.
The Bodyguard remake, to be fair to it, does have some talented people working on it. The new version is being written by playwright Matthew López, writer of the acclaimed 2018 play The Inheritance. Lawrence Kasdan, the writer of the original, is also on board as a co-producer.
In other Whitney Houston-related movie news, a biopic about the legendary singer is also on the way. Beautifully titled I Wanna Dance With Somebody, it’s due for release next year.
No update yet on what Bobby Brown thinks about who’s just been announced to play him in the biopic: the role has went to Ashton Sanders, who you may remember from his breakout turn in the sublime coming-of-age drama Moonlight (he played the teenage version of the lead character Chiron). Naomi Ackie, most recently seen in season three of Master of None, has been given the honour and hard task of bringing Whitney to the screen.
Considering all that Whitney and Bobby Brown went through together, that should be a far more harrowing watch than any remake of The Bodyguard. And very crucially, the forthcoming biopic has been approved by Whitney’s own estate.
