The HSC has wrapped up for another year, with results published this week and students around the country logging in to see how their hard efforts have paid off. Today, the anticipation ramps up as students find out their ATAR score, hoping that it will get them into their desired university courses. However, if your ATAR isn’t what you were aiming for, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world.

Take it from this writer who left school at 16 and completed a diploma in communications at the age of 17, your ATAR score is not the be all and end all.

The College at Western Sydney University have a diverse range of 12 month diploma programs suitable for anyone who didn’t manage to get into their desired degree, but who wants to continue studying.

The diploma programs offer introductory courses across a broad range of subjects, and offer students the opportunity to advance from the diploma directly into the second year of their chosen degree.

Why a diploma is right for you.

Committing to a degree immediately after high school is a daunting concept. What seventeen year old knows that they want to do with the rest of their life?

A diploma offers you the freedom and opportunity to learn more within a range of subjects over one year. At the end you have the choice to continue your studies in the second year of the degree, or finish with a qualification.

If you never finished school or don’t have an ATAR of 55 or higher, you can enrol in an extended diploma. It only takes an extra four months and offers you the same opportunities at the end as a normal diploma.

Outside of offering you an entry into full higher education, these diplomas offer a chance to experience student life. Taking part in activities on campus and building relationships with your peers in a new way.
