Denise Sánchez, from the ‘girl explaining’ meme recently spoke on what was actually happening and explained the meme.
The actual photo behind the meme was taken back in 2018 when 21-year-old Denise Sánchez was with her then-boyfriend at an Argentina beach party. The picture has now taken off and is being widely circulated as part of a meme format.
“SO ACTUALLY GOING FINE FREE MEANS THAT PEOPLE WHO AVOIDED THE LIBRARY BECAUSE OF THEIR FINES ARE COMING BACK AND OFTEN THEY’RE THE FOLKS WHO NEED US MOST. ALSO NO, WE HAVE NOT SEEN AN INCREASE IN LOST OR STOLEN BOOKS—IT TURNS OUT WHEN YOU TRUST PEOPLE TO BE KIND TO EACH OT”

Sánchez, a nutrition student, recently explained that the context was much different. She said that her boyfriend was tired and she was singing along to a song when another group of people accidentally caught them in the back of the photo.
“I remember she uploaded it to Twitter,” she said. “What a letdown. They messed up the picture because those two kids were in the back with that face,” Sánchez told the Daily Mail. “She was laughing because we came out in the back of the photo and she came out pretty, but she could not post it because we were in it.”
Denise also spoke on how far the meme has gone and what it’s brought her.
“The music festival even gave us free tickets for the next year,” she told recently told the Washington Post. “But I thought Argentina and other Latino countries would be as far as the meme went.”
“The truth is that I take everything very calmly and with great grace,” she told the Daily Mail. “I don’t mind being exposed because I’m pretty outgoing. So I’m not ashamed. The context they put it made me laugh a lot.”
