Get ready to belt out all those funny things that define irony in life (personal favourite: “It’s a death row pardon two minutes too late”) as Jagged Little Pill, the musical based around the Alanis Morissette album of the same name, is heading to Australia.

The Broadway show’s sojourn Down Under was first announced in April but a proposed September launch was postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thankfully, as per Concrete Playground, they’ve managed to confirm December 2nd as its official start date, with an exclusive local run at Sydney’s Theatre Royal. And it’s an extra grand affair because Jagged Little Pill will help reopen the Theatre Royal after it shut its doors in 2016.

The musical is essentially Mamma Mia! but for 90’s alternative rock fans. Inspired by Morissette’s 1995 album of the same name, Jagged Little Pill creates a story based around the iconic songs from that record. The jukebox musical will have you singing along to the likes of ‘Ironic’, ‘You Oughta Know’, and ‘Head Over Feet’.

It stars Natalie Bassingthwaighte as Mary Jane Healey, the story following her family as they struggle with their seemingly idyllic suburban lives after a troubling event in their community.

Alanis Morissette handled the music and lyrics while the book was written by Diablo Cody, the writer of Juno Jennifer’s Body.

The musical should prove popular in Australia if the album’s success if anything to go by: Jagged Little Pill topped the ARIA Album Chart and went on to be certified Platinum 14 times.

The Tonys actually took place on Sunday and Jagged Little Pill had the most nominees with a huge 15. It won only two awards, though Best Book of a Musical (Diablo Cody) and Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical (Lauren Patten).

Tickets are currently on sale for shows until Sunday, December 19th. You can find further details on the musical’s website.
