First Thanksgiving transformed into Friendsgiving and now it seems like Christmas is changing according to a new study.

Commissioned by the adventures experience site Adrenaline in conjunction with McCrindle, they looked at the festive habits of over 1,000 Australians aged between 18 and 41. The study revealed that 92% of young Aussies are abandoning tradition and opting for an unconventional Christmas this year – ditching family lunch in favour of adventure.

The research showed 46% wished they had an excuse to not attend family Christmas lunch – remember the horror of awkward small talk with your uncle – with 43% admitting to finding the festivities of Christmas Day boring. Instead, they said they’d prefer to seek out experiences such as helicopter rides (33%), kayaking (33%), and skydiving (26%).

There’s a simple reason for this. “After the year we’ve all been through, it’s not hard to see why young Aussies are throwing tradition out the window in favour of once in a lifetime experiences,” Futurist and demographer Ashley Fell, explained.

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen a steady increase in Gen Z and Gen Y challenging the status quo – which has only been accelerated by the most recent restrictions and lockdowns. With a new year around the corner, people are reflecting on 2021 and all the experiences they’ve missed out on. Going forward, we’re set to see more Australians wanting to fill their lives with excitement and adventure over the holiday season and beyond.”

And it’s not limited to Christmas either – the study showed this unconventional trend is also set to continue into the New Year, with 90% of young Aussies wanting to try something new and exciting in 2022. After so long spent in lockdown recently, I think we’ve all earned the chance to be adrenaline junkies for a change.

If you fancy trying out an Unconventional Christmas of your own, head to the Adrenaline website and choose from over 2,500 adventurous experiences to share with your loved ones instead of the usual turkey.
