The Art Gallery of New South Wales will bring the work of one of the most influential and innovative photographers of the nineteenth century to Sydney this spring.

The exhibition will feature the work of Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-79), over 100 photographs drawing from the rare and extensive collection of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum.

Cameron’s photography memorialised the intellectual and artistic elite of Victorian England, including the likes of scientist Charles Darwin and poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson.

“Using the camera to convey both tenderness and strength, Cameron introduced an emotive sensibility to early photographic portraiture,” said Senior Curator of Photographs at the Art Gallery of NSW, Judy Annear.

A series of Cameron’s personal letters will also be on display.

The exhibition runs from Saturday August 15 to Sunday October 25. For more information visit the Gallery website.
