Rather than an Oscar, which can be the kiss of death for a career – Tom Hulce, anyone? –winning Flickerfest opens a great many doors.

Flickerfest has announced the winners of its 25th festival, with prizes going to Balcony, an English short from director Toby Fell-Holden and Australia’sSlingshot, directed by David Hansen.A Tale Of Love, Madness And Death, a Chilean production, won the top gong for the documentary section.

There were a string of ‘special mentions’ listed as well, hinting at the difficulty of the judge’s decision and the great wealth of talent on display. Among those singled out for honourable attention were documentaryGiovanni And The Water Ballet and Germany’sEverything Will Be Okay.
