It was only a matter of time until viral trends took off based on Squid Game. Over on TikTok, fans have been attempting the honeycomb challenge from the Netflix show. That’s the one where contestants try to carve out a specific shape from a piece of honeycomb using only a pin without breaking it.
It’s not always gone well. As reported by The Daily Mail, a Sydney teenager suffered serious first-degree burns on his hand and leg after the honeycomb challenge severely backfired.
The poor lad tried to melt the honeycomb mixture in a non-microwavable cup, causing it to explode in his hand when he tried to remove it. I can almost feel the searing heat of that mixture just writing about it.
The teenager, Aiden Higgie, suffered a wound so bad that doctors believe he’ll now need a skin graft. While his burns are luckily healing, he’ll have to spend the next year in a pressure bandage.
“It boiled up to a ridiculous temperature, and when he took the cup out it exploded in his hand,” Aiden’s mum Helen said. “It has burnt his hand, and because it was sugar and plastic melted together, it has run down his leg from his knee down to his shin and it stuck and kept on burning and burning and burning. It was like toffee and burnt right through to the nerves.”
Aiden is actually one of three children admitted to the same Sydney hospital in just the last month for burns related to the Squid Game challenge. He said he initially wanted to give the challenge a go after seeing so many others do it on the internet.
So yes, please don’t try the honeycomb challenge at home. Viral trends are probably best to be avoided in general.
