A deepfake video of actor Miles Fisher convincingly impersonating Tom Cruise at the AFI’s through the use of AI is going viral.

The video shows – what looks to be – Tom Cruise running and jumping over AFI presenter and actor Miles Fisher’s head before addressing the camera.

“Just want to jump in and wish you luck,” he says to Fisher. “Congrats on the AFI awards. Congrats on life. Congrats on the look. Work on the humour a little bit.”

While the video looks convincingly like Tom Cruise, it’s actually created by Miles Fisher who has fooled millions with his Tom Cruise deepfake videos.

Deepfake is a form of artificial intelligence called deep learning to make images of fake events. The technology makes stunning replicas of one with another in video and other digital media.

Fisher has created a lot of video’s impersonating Cruise, including ones showing him playing golf and doing magic tricks.

“As I find myself the unofficial face of this deepfake movement, it’s important to learn and I’m fascinated by this,” Fisher told TODAY. “This is the bleeding edge of technology.”

He added: “I think we’ve created the first deepfake that’s so realistic, that a large majority of people have seen.”

Fisher works with Belgian visual effects specialist Chris Umé to create the videos that appear on TikTok @deeptomcruise. The pair don’t profit from the account, which has over 3.4 million followers.

During Fisher’s appearance on Today, he was asked how long it takes to produce a deepfake video of Cruise from start to finish.

“About five days, maximum six days, I could turn around something like this,” he replied.
