The alien ship feature in the new Nope movie has been unveiled in a TV spot that aired during the NBA Finals.

Nope was previously confirmed to be an alien inspired movie, but the TV spot showed the first look at the ship.

The blockbuster will star Black Panther’s Daniel Kaluuya, Hustler’s Keke Palme and The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun. The plotline for the new film reads: “The residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.”

Nope is written and directed by Jordan Peele. Speaking on a panel at CinemaCon, he described the inspiration behind the name of the movie.

“I love a rapt audience saying, ‘Nope!’ or, ‘Get out the house!’” he told the crowd.

“I love to encourage that interaction because that’s what’s giving the audience a unique experience. Rollercoasters aren’t fun alone. Being scared isn’t fun alone. You need that energy.”

The title speaks to the idea of being in tune with what the audience is thinking and feeling in the theatre.

“I know a lot of people who say, when it’s a scary movie, they say, ‘Nope!’ Especially Black audiences, right? We love horror but there’s a scepticism.”

Nope marks Peele’s third time directing. He has previously directed horror movies Us (2019) and Get Out (2017).

Get Out earnt Peele a screenwriting Oscar and was one of the highest-grossing films of 2017. Us was also a commercial success, grossing $255.1 million worldwide. While Peele directed both projects, eagle-eyed viewers will recognise him as the voice of the fun house narrator in Us.

Nope is coming to cinemas in Australia on 11 August 2022.
