If you walk into your local Harvey Norman this morning and the sales staff are rude to you, well it could be for a multitude of reasons that are almost certainly separate to you and your existence, but the most likely reason is that Amazon launched in Australia this morning, just in time to completely up end the retail sector for Christmas.
While it’s a headache/living nightmare for brick and mortar retailers (and online sellers too), it’s a Xmas miracle for consumers, with free delivery on orders over $49. Amazon are even even offering one-day service in various areas.
Amazon Fresh — the supermarket arm of the multinational — isn’t launching here just yet, which is good news for the Woolies at Marrickville Metro, who just spent a bundle on renovations. Still, it’s a huge blow to our $16 billion retail sector.
