Andrew Garfield has revealed that he hopes to celebrate his win for Best Actor at the HCA Film Awards by tripping on shrooms with Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Taking the stage at the Hollywood Critics Association’s award ceremony on Monday night to accept his award for his role in Miranda’s film Tick, Tick…BOOM, Garfield told the crowd that he hoped to take a trip of a different kind alongside the director.

“That’s fucking crazy … that we get to be here while you’re breathing,” Andrew said to the Hamilton playwright, adding, “It’s like being alive when Beethoven was alive.”

He added that he hoped the pair could “take some mushrooms” while watching Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar.

“I fucking love you, Lin,” he added as the crowd cheered.

It’s not the first time Garfield has expressed his fondness for the psychedelic. He once told The Guardian newspaper: “I think we are vastly unknowable unless we meditate 18 hours a day and/or go on mushroom trips to discover all the nooks and crannies of ourselves.”

Asked about his experiences, he continued: “Ah, that may be a bit too personal to go into…. I’m definitely aware that I’m not aware of the majority of what I am.”

However, in a later interview, he confirmed that he had indeed dabbled in taking shrooms.

“Look, I’m not in any way advocating young people do it, but I have had amazing experiences, with mushrooms,” Garfield explained.

“I’ve always done it in a kind of ritualistic way, out in nature. It really can be a spiritual thing.”
