The Los Angeles Police Department is investigating Call Me By Your Name actor Armie Hammer for an alleged rape.

A woman named Effie has accused Armie Hammer of “violently” raping her during a press conference with lawyer Gloria Allred. Effie alleges that the assault took place on April 24, 2017 when she was 20 years old.

“On April 24, 2017, Armie Hammer violently raped me for over four hours in Los Angeles, during which he repeatedly slapped my head against a wall bruising my face,” Effie said. “He also committed other acts of violence against me to which I did not consent.”

The 24-year-old woman went on to detail harrowing incidents of abuse she allegedly experienced at the hands of Hammer. Effie claims that during the assault Hammer beat her feet “so they would hurt” when walking. Effie claims that she attempted to get away “but he wouldn’t let me.”

“He then left with no concern for my well being. I was completely in shock,” Effie said.

Effie details that she and Hammer first met on Facebook in 2016. She details that she “fell in love with him instantly,” and the pair entered an on-and-off relationship between 2016 and 2020. Effie claims that the relationship was “mentally, emotionally and sexually” abusive.

Andrew Brettler, the lawyer representing Armie Hammer, has responded to the rape allegations in a statement issued to Variety. In addition to the statement, Brettler supplied a screenshot of a text conversation between Hammer and Effie, where Hammer outlines, “I am not going to be able to engage in you in that specific way right now. It never ends well. We can talk and be friends, but I can’t do that.”

“Effie’s own correspondence with Mr. Hammer undermines and refutes her outrageous allegations. As recently as July 18, 2020, [she] sent graphic texts to Mr. Hammer telling him what she wanted him to do to her. Mr. Hammer responded making it clear that he did not want to maintain that type of relationship with her,” the statement read.

“It was never Mr. Hammer’s intention to embarrass or expose [Effie’s] fetishes or kinky sexual desires, but she has now escalated this matter to another level by hiring a civil lawyer to host a public press conference. With the truth on his side, Mr. Hammer welcomes the opportunity to set the record straight,” the statement continues.

“From day one, Mr. Hammer has maintained that all of his interactions with [Effie] — and every other sexual partner of his for that matter — have been completely consensual, discussed and agreed upon in advance, and mutually participatory. [Effie’s] attention seeking and ill-advised legal bid will only make it more difficult for real victims of sexual violence to get the justice they deserve.”

In response to the statement, Gloria Allred wrote: ” “I challenge Armie Hammer to present all, not some, of his communications with Effie to the Los Angeles Police Department and answer all of their questions directly rather than through his lawyers.”

Armie Hammer’s career has been in free fall since January after a series of alleged leaked messages from the actor surfaced on Instagram detailing cannibalistic fetishes. These screenshots opened the floodgates and a number of women who had been sexually or romantically involved with Hammer came forward alleging emotional abuse, manipulation and coercion.

This is the first time a former partner of Hammer has accused the actor of rape in a public forum with the legal protection of an attorney.

“My hope in speaking out about the abuse I endured at the hands of Armie Hammer is that he will be held accountable. I feel immense guilt for not speaking out sooner, because I feel that I might have been able to save others from becoming victims,” Effie shared. “By speaking out today, I hope to prevent others from falling victim to him in the future. I want other survivors of sexual assault around the world to feel empowered and know that they are heard, believed, understood, supported, and loved.”
