An Aussie plus-sized model has called out online retailer SHEIN retailer for photoshopping her body to look slimmer.
Fast-fashion retailer SHEIN hasn’t been under fire for just their ethical violations, harmful environmental impact, and inflated prices, but also for how they seem to be perpetuating unrealistic body standards on the internet.
Aussie plus-sized model Sarah Jane Kelly put the brand on blast on her Tiktok when she realised that the retailer had photoshopped her body to look slimmer than it is.
In a video posted to her Tiktok, Kelly posted the picture that SHEIN had used on their website, pointing out the many digital alterations that had been done to her body. Her skin had been smoothened, her waist had been cinched, and her stomach looked considerably flatter.

She claimed that she had to do a double-take when she first saw the picture, because it took a minute to recognise herself: “When you are the model in the picture and even your body doesn’t look like that either.” She captioned the video: “And that is on unrealistic beauty standards.”
Since its release, Kelly’s video has accrued support from more people calling out SHEIN for their misleading practices and pictures online. “This is why I DESPISE plus size model pictures on Shein and everywhere because they say plus size AND THEN EDIT OUT THE PLUS FROM IT.” one comment said.
Many also pointed out that SHEIN had not only photoshopped the picture, but also apparently done a hack job of it. “The edits are visible around the edges, almost always,” as one comment pointed out.
