Austin Butler collectively raised eyebrows all around the world when he put on an Elvis Presley accent while accepting his Golden Globe – despite the fact that the movie finished filming almost two years ago.

Butler won best performance by an actor in a motion picture – drama for his performance in Elvis, and thanked Elvis Presley himself in the speech.

However, it wasn’t Butler’s momentous win that made headlines – but rather the Memphis accent he adopted in his acceptance speech. And, the actor has since confirmed that he didn’t put the Elvis voice on for show but believes it is now ingrained in his DNA.

When Butler was asked about the accent at a post-show press conference, he said he didn’t think he put one on, but said “I guess I must because I hear it a lot.”

He added, “I had three years where that was my only focus, so I’m sure there’s pieces of him in my DNA and I’ll always be linked.”

In an interview with Access Hollywood, the Golden Globe winner likened the Elvis accent to developing an accent twang when living in a different country long term.

“I don’t think there’s anything I didn’t see or watch or listen to, truly. I read every book that was written on his life, I listened to every audio interview he gave, every bit of footage and home footage. Everything,” he told Access Hollywood.

“I liken it [his voice] to when you live in another country for a long time, you end up soaking it in and it becomes apart of your DNA, in a way.”
