The 2002 Bali Bombings was a terrorist attack that saw two of Kuta Beach’s busiest nightclubs, Paddys Irish Bar and Sari Club hit with bombs, leaving  202 people dead, including 88 Australians.

Australian and British task forces worked with Indonesian authorities to find the terrorist behind the attack. Just a week after the bombings, more than 30 terrorists were arrested who were suspected of planning and executing the bombings.

Further investigations identified the terrorist organisation Jemaah Islamiyah as the force behind the attack. Jemaah Islamiyah is linked to al-Queda the international terrorist network founded by Osama bin Laden.

In 2008, three men were executed for their part in the terrorist attack, and in 2020 Zulkarnaen, the leading member of Jemaah Islamiyah was found guilty of terrorism related to the bombings, and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

As a result of the bombings, the Balinese tourism industry was hit hard, as many tourists were scared to come to the island, and foreign arrivals immediately fell by almost two-thirds. It took years for the Indonesian island to return to post-attack levels of tourism.

Paddy’s Bar was rebuilt at a location close to the original spot, however, Sari club was never reconstructed. There is a large memorial built near the bombing site that commemorates all the victims by name.
