We declare that it is officially hot cross bun season! (Not just Easter weekend, but every weekend…)
But now that the Easter time is officially upon us, it looks like we’re in for a special treat – for anyone in Melbourne this weekend, that is.
Right now there’s a bunch of hot cross bun sweet treats being baked in and around Melbourne as we speak and we want to help you track down some of the best. Getting in early and pre-orders depending on each bakery are advised.
Candied Bakery, Spotswood
The west-side bakery adored for their delectable cinnamon scrolls also happen to make a mean hot cross bun (no surprises there). With just the right amount of cooked and pureed orange zest, their buns will have you nothing if not addicted. Getting in quick is advised to avoid the disappointment of them being sold out.
Din Tai Fung, multiple locations
Oh bao! The legends at Din Tai Fung have brought us their take on the Easter treat: a Hot Cross Bao. You can expect a fluffy, pillowy bao which oozes warm, molten chocolate… available from March 22nd for a limited time only.
Black Star Pastry, St Kilda
Sydney’s Black Star Pastry touched down in Melbourne pre-pandemic, back in 2019. And luckily for us Melburnians, we’re able to get our hands on their 100% vegan buns every day from Monday 15th March through until Monday 5th April. They only have 350 buns available per day, but pre-orders with 24 hours in advance are available.
Mörk Chocolate Brew House, North Melbourne
Dubbed the “Mörk X Bun”, this bun is anything but traditional and is also a hot contender for one of the best of 2021. Described as, “sticky on the outside, buttery soft and spiked with fruit, nutmeg, cinnamon, coriander and cloves”, if you’re keen to try one this year, you better to the bakery early or get your pre-order in now.
Gelato Messina, multiple locations
The ice cream Gods, Gelato Messina have crafted the ultimate Easter ice cream crossover: hot cross bun gelato. “Smashed with buttered hot cross buns”, you definitely do not want to sleep on this one!
