For those of us who aren’t overly interested in American football, the ads played during the Super Bowl are often one of the highlights of the night.

The brands that pay big bucks to have their advertisements featured usually pull out all the stops and this year was no exception.

Although Timothee Chalamet’s turn as the son of Edward Scissorhands certainly set tongues wagging, there were a plethora of other commercials starring celebrities.

From clips featuring Cardi B to Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, here are the most memorable ads from the 2021 Super Bowl:

Verizon

Internet company Verizon certainly served up one of the most, ah, creative ads of the evening. The truly chaotic commercial sees a CGI version of Samual L. Jackon get eaten by a shark ridden by football player Juju Smith-Schuster. It seems his gruesome demise was a punishment for taunting gamers over blaming slow internet for their losses and ah, fair enough we guess?

Hellman’s

The ad for Hellman’s mayonnaise saw Amy Schumer transformed into a ‘Fairy Godmayo’, complete with fairy wings. Her mission? To provide mayonnaise for those looking for inspiration in the kitchen. I mean, hey, it’s a pretty obscure power, but it’s a harmless ad all the same.

M&M’s

M&M’s smartly chose to capitalise on the popularity of Schitt’s Creek by featuring star Dan Levy in the offering. On top of Levy’s cameo, the ad is chock full of very 2021 references like talk of ‘Karens’ and ‘mansplaining’. The ad’s message is apparently about using M&M’s to apologise but honestly, we’ll take any excuse to eat them.

Jeep

Yep, it seems Bruce Springsteen has finally sold out, and it’s for Jeep of all things. The ad shows The Boss sitting in his own 1980 Jeep CJ-5 while delivering a monologue on bridging the political provide. No matter how relevant the message might be, it’s a little hard to see what it has to do with advertising a car.

Cheetos

This ad for Cheetos features the unexpected combination of golden couple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher and Shaggy. Throughout the clip, Kunis and Kutcher perform their own rendition of ‘It Wasn’t Me’ when he catches her eating Cheetos. Although the concept is at least a little silly, the charisma of all involved saved this from being too cringe-worthy.

Uber Eats

Speaking of surprising trios, we can’t say we expected to see Cardi B team up with Wayne’s World stars Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. Regardless, the ad depicts the iconic Wayne and Gath attempting to use Cardi B’s celeb status to promote ordering from local restaurants. To cap things off, the group even sing together.

State Farm

Apparently realising that most of us aren’t terribly interested in insurance commercials, State Farm chose to compensate by enlisting Paul Rudd and Drake. The ad sees Rudd and Drake play stand-ins for the brand’s trademark spokespeople which is slightly random but entertaining nonetheless.

General Motors

This General Motors commercial features yet another wacky combination of celebrities, as Will Ferrell Kenen Thompson and Awkwafina join forces to spruik their latest electric car. The ad sees the group attempt to travel to Norway, but accidentally ending up in Sweden and Finland instead.

Cadillac LYRIQ

Of course, it would be remiss of me not to mention the Super Bowl ad that has caused the biggest stir. This commercial for Cadillac LYRIQ saw Hollywood golden boy Timothee Chalamet take on the role of Edgar Scissorhands, the son of Johnny Depp’s Edward. As if that wasn’t epic enough, Winona Rider also reprised her role from the original movie. The premise of the ad is that Edgar can drive the car because it features driver assistance, in case anyone is actually interested in that.
