If I were a wizard, then I’d definitely love to be a ‘Blue Wizard’ who is considered an expert in the field of “flirting, fucking and dancing” and needs only “diamonds, cocaine and jizz” to survive. What more could you ask for?

Blue Wizard, written and performed by the talented Nick Coyle, is a hilarious tongue-in-cheek one-man show that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and at times, pushes past the boundaries of reality into Coyle’s uniquely original and, let’s be honest, bizarre world.

Based on the simple premise of a wizard crashing to earth in a comet and being unable to return to his former planet, his civilisation and most importantly, his boyfriend, Blue Wizardis a play that seeks to entertain audiences, rather than leave them discussing the ‘hidden’ messages Coyle is seeking to convey. If there are any, well, I sure as hell missed them.

There are some absolute side-splitting moments in this short but sharp performance as Coyle goes about casting spells, breast-feeding grubs (it sounds ridiculous, but trust me, it works), singing, dancing and desperately trying to escape Earth and return to his planet.

Although there are a couple of lagging moments, as well as the odd cheesy joke, Blue Wizard is a solid piece of highly entertaining and very original theatre. Heralded as the “gayest one-man show ever” (by Coyle himself I believe), Blue Wizard is a light-hearted show that is definitely worth checking out – especially if you are feeling inclined to get in the spirit of Mardi Gras.

Despite the fact Blue Wizard might not give you any insight, let alone answers, in regards to the meaning of life, you will get to see a fully grown man wearing a blue wig, breast-feeding a puppet and taking the piss out of just about everything (including Meryl Streep and She-Devil) that our world has given us.
