Australia’s fastest-growing music and entertainment publisher The Brag Media has partnered with Young Henrys, one of Sydney’s most formative local craft breweries to help support local journalists.

In May 2019 The Brag Media introduced its reader-requested cross-platform ‘Shout The Writer a Coffee’ feature in order to give its fans the opportunity to tip or donate directly to their favourite writers. Many online media publishers bolster their businesses via paywalls and subscription models, The Brag Media’s initiative allows readers to support its writers directly.

Now, Young Henrys is taking the feature one step further with a new partnership to support The Brag Media’s writer community.

The Brag Media has today rebranded the programme to ‘Shout The Writer a Beer’ and has announced a commitment to commission the writer who receives the most donations to write a long-form piece of their choice. The writer will be paid $3,000 for the one piece, and the article will be published across one of The Brag Media’s five publications, which includes Tone Deaf, The Industry Observer, The Brag, and Rolling Stone Australia.

The Brag Media’s Managing Editor Poppy Reid said:

“Back when I was a freelancer, there were many pitches that I sent to Editors or publishers that were just never picked up. I understand there are myriad reasons why wish-list articles never saw the light of day, but this partnership with Young Henrys is one that I’m personally thrilled about.

“Every writer has a dream long-form piece they want to write, but may not have been given the chance to work on yet. Thanks to Young Henrys, this is going to allow the freelancer who our readers love the most to have any article they want to write commissioned and published by us.”

Young Henrys shares a mutual love of music with The Brag Media. From its partnerships with local artists in the past, to the recent launch of its spring music series – where it will host live music every week in October – the brewery has always been a staunch ally of the music industry.

Young Henrys co-founder Oscar McMahon said:

“The music industry isn’t just made up of musicians; it is a complex, living, breathing organism of venue owners, road crew, sound and lighting techs, festival promoters, bookers, agents, labels, media and the humble music journos who paint the picture of the whole scene, giving us enticement, encouragement and inspiration.

“In a year where every single one of the above deserves a beer we’re pretty happy to be working with Brag Media to wet the lips of those who whet our musical appetites. Here’s to the lot of you.”

Through its ‘Shout The Writer a Beer’ feature, The Brag Media hopes to further help strengthen the bond between its fans and its writers. If a reader is particularly moved by a certain article, or would just like to further support the writer they can shout them a beer using The Brag Media’s micropayment system attached to each article.

As always, readers can choose how much they’d like to donate and even leave a personalised ‘thank you’ note for the writer.

Note: While The Brag Media supports free expression, it expects the article commissioned as part of its partnership with Young Henrys to be free of hate speech, well-informed and accurate. The Brag Media also expects the feature article to be over 3,000 words and include multiple interviews as part of the research process.

The feature article commission will be decided upon in October 2021, after 12 months of ‘Buy the Writer a Beer’.
