With 29 years passed since the original Candyman hit our screens, the much-awaited sequel is almost here. Candyman will be released in Australian movie theatres this Thursday, August 26th, 2021.
Ahead of its release, we sat down with Candyman star Colman Domingo, who plays William Burke in the blockbuster.
During our interview, Domingo let it slip that there’s a hidden detail in one of the scenes that viewers should keep their eyes peeled for.
Now, the below may come as a spoiler for the movie if you’re familiar with its premise. So, if you’re looking to be unspoiled- this is your warning to stop reading.
The scene in question takes place when Domino is walking to the laundromat and carrying a bag.
“You’ll notice when I’m walking, I’m carrying a bag, you’ll notice what’s in the bag is the tools that I have, the saw and everything,” Domingo begins. “So basically, I recognize who he is and he carries the things that I would use to turn him [Anthony] into Candyman.’
Watch Kristian Fanene Schmidt interview Colman Domingo ahead of the release of Candyman:
“But I think that he’s [Candyman] assessing and the entire time he’s been watching. He’s been there, he’s so ingrained in the neighbourhood, so he’s been summoning this child to come.”

“He’s been doing his own summoning to come back to summon the spirit of candy man because I think he’s really trying to examine black trauma in this neighbourhood.”
“I think the thing I take away the most with Wiliam Burke is that he’s very convinced that you can’t just come in and take over this neighbourhood and just have the beautiful landscape and everything – you must take everything and that includes the trauma as well.”
The original Candyman, which was released in 1992, followed a university student who is researching an urban legend character called Candyman. The story went that Candyman was a black man who fell in love with a white woman. The two went on to have a child together, but when the woman’s father found out, he had the man killed. Helen summons the Candyman and he begins killing those closest to her and kidnaps her son Anthony.
Candyman continues to terrorise Helen until he offers her a deal: join him for a life of immortal, supernatural status and he will give her back Anthony. Helen agrees and Candyman leads her to her child. In an epic battle, Helen manages to kill Candyman and free her son, but she dies in the process.
Since the original Candyman, there have been two sequels: Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1995) and Candyman: Day of the Dead (1999).
The upcoming Candyman blockbuster sequel follows Helen’s son Anthony who is an artist in Chicago. He has no knowledge about his past but stumbles upon the story of Candyman and aims to integrate it into his artistic work. By doing so, he opens the door back to Candyman and horrifying events ensue.
