I Am My Own Wife is set to appear on Sydney’s theatre scene, allowing us to relive one person’s journey through the times of Nazi Germany.

Playwright Doug Wright was inspired to write the story after hearing the survival tale of a 65-year-old German transvestite, Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, who survived two of the most oppressive regimes of the 20th century, the Nazis and the Communists.

All 30 characters in the play are performed by the one-man acting machine,Ben Gerrard, and the play seeks to narrate Charlotte’s amazing story of triumph which occurs in an atmosphere of extreme hatred and suspicion.

I Am My Own Wife will play at the Old Fitzroy Theatre from Tuesday November 17 – Saturday December 5. To get tickets, visit the site.
