Cockatoos are renowned for their intelligence. The birds can solve complex mechanical puzzles and their mimicry puts Dana Carvey in The Master of Disguise to shame. However, one South African cockatoo is proving to be the exception to the rule.

Footage has emerged of a pet cockatoo that has somehow convinced himself that they’re a guard dog. The video shows the bird and his furry companions circling the front gate of their owner’s house, preparing to staunch any passerby that poses a threat.

“My parrot is like a child in the house he has been part of the family for nineteen years,” the owner explained. “He grew up amongst dogs and is lovable and super intelligent. He copies many human and dog actions. He loves cuddling and playing with the dogs. He is truly one of a kind.”

Whilst some might be fooled into believing that this bird has mastered the art of method acting, it is clear that this is just a bird who genuinely thinks they’re a dog.

Check out the footage below and come to your own conclusion.

Watch: Cockatoo guards the house like a dog

It is well and truly the season of stupid birds. Earlier this month an “exotic” bird was rescued by good Samaritans on a highway in England. The bird was taken to Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital where it was discovered that it was not exotic at all, merely a common seagull that had gotten itself mixed up in a batch of turmeric and curry powder.

If birds are learning how to assume alternate identities I don’t think I want to live on this planet anymore.
