After more than a decade as one of biggest names in the sport, Irish fighter Conor McGregor has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts.

In a statement shared to Twitter this evening, the 30-year-old sportsman announced his retirement to his legions of followers.

“Hey guys quick announcement, I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as ‘Mixed Martial Art’ today,” McGregor wrote.

“I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement. Proper Pina Coladas on me fellas!”

Of course, this news might seem familiar to some, with Conor McGregor previously announcing his retirement from the sport back in 2016.

Widely assumed by some to be a publicity stunt, McGregor noted he had “decided to retire young” back in April of 2016, however, he quickly reversed this decision with a rematch against Nate Diaz in August of that year.

Despite McGregor’s retirement, he hasn’t fought since October of 2018, when he was beaten in the fourth round by Khabib Nurmagomedov in Las Vegas.

As MMA Fighting notes, Conor McGregor was reportedly linked to a fight in July with Donald Cerrone, though this was debunked last week.

Meanwhile, McGregor was arrested in the Miami, Florida last week for allegedly smashing the phone of a fan who attempted to take his picture. That same man is now reportedly suing McGregor for damages.

While it remains to be seen whether or not Conor McGregor’s retirement from MMA will indeed be permanent this time around, it’s clear that his enigmatic nature will be sorely missed from the sport.
