COVID-19 has seen take-away and throw-away culture hit the scene again, after many had chosen to go zero-waste. Now, you can fight the battle against the bin with asking for a ‘contactless coffee’, and continue reusing your Keep Cup.

Two months ago, when COVID-19 started revving up around the globe, take-away shops were quick to ban the BYO coffee cup, as fears rose that the virus could live on surfaces. For those of us who try to keep the Earth in mind, and attempt to live as zero-waste as possible, the news of this was a nightmare.

Now, however, author & advocate Sarah Wilson is challenging waste warriors to bring back the use of reusable Keep Cups by ordering a ‘contactless coffee’ from your local, responsible café.

“The collective ‘pause and reflect’ that isolation has imposed on us has seen many Australians gagging to get on with creating a better world on the other side. Simple consumer gestures, like reducing disposables, feels like a tangible, doable step,” Wilson detalied.

So, how exactly do you order an Earth and health conscious ‘contactless coffee’, especially when the café doesn’t exactly have it on the menu? The steps couldn’t be more simple.

All you’ve got to do is ask the barista to make the coffee in a porcelain ‘drink-in’ cup or mug, and set your clean reusable cup on a cloth or paper serviette, or even a porcelain plate, and then ask the barista to pour your beverage into your reusable cup without touching it.

As baristas are pouring masters, no doubt, they’ll be able to do this in a jiffy seeing you reduce your waste all while having a delicious beverage to sip on.

Your local not entirely keen on the idea? Simply reduce your waste by asking for your to-go coffee to be ‘topless’, or without a lid, and you could be saving heaps of rubbish from hitting the bins.
