Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness spoilers below.

Deadline scooper Justin Kroll revealed on Twitter that Marvel Studios originally wanted Daniel Craig to play Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic in the film.

“Fun fact, Krasinski wasn’t the first choice, the actor originally set to play the role was all set to shoot but when there was an uptick in COVID cases, he backed out as he was living in London and didn’t think the quick shoot wasn’t worth risk of bringing back COVID to the fam.”

Daniel Craig is no stranger to appearing in big franchises, starring as James Bond for 5 films, or Disney cameos — previously appearing as a Stormtrooper in The Force Awakens.

Fans are still in the dark if John Krasinski, who ended up playing Mister Fantastic in Multiverse of Madness, will return in the role for Earth-616. As you may recall, Reed Richards and the other members of the Illuminati on Earth-838 got washed immediately by Scarlet Witch in the film. The original casting of Daniel Craig as Mister Fantastic does make John Krasinski’s appearance feel like a one-off, although this could be Kevin Feige testing the waters with fans. In week after Multiverse of Madness‘ release, John Krasinski’s Amazon show Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan announced it’s ending. Director Jon Watts also just left the Fantastic Four film in development. Could this all be clearing the way for John Krasinski to direct and star?

Screenwriter Michael Waldron says Krasinski returning in the role is ‘a question for somebody else’

“I’m not involved in the casting, but as with all of these performers, I worked really closely with him in bringing that character to life with him and Sam. And especially on that one, because that was the one character that had no real precedent ever in the MCU, at least. Figuring out how we want this guy to be — that was a lot of fun. That particular character is certainly one of my favorite comic book characters.”
