Dave Hughes made an unfortunate joke about ‘pegging’, seemingly without realising  what he was saying.

Hughes recounted the moment as part of his upcoming stand-up special on Prime Video, Dave Hughes: Ridiculous.

“I love doing comedy. I love hanging out with new comedians. They come up with terms I don’t know. I was backstage at a little club recently, there was a bloke on stage and he said ‘My girlfriend pegged me last night,'” Hughes said.

“I thought pegging was when you put a clothes peg on the back of someone’s shirt, I walked on stage and said ‘Who cares? My kids peg me all the time.”

It’s worth noting that whichever comedian Hughes is referring to, they definitely didn’t invent the term ‘pegging’.

Hughes’ special is one of five Australian stand-up specials Prime Video is releasing this year, including the upcoming Tommy Little: Pretty Fly for a Dickhead and Lizzy Hoo: Hoo Cares? The streaming platform has already released Joel Creasey: Queen of the Outback and Rhys Nicholson’s Big Queen Comedy Concert.

Prime Video noted Hughes’ tumultuous few years throughout Melbourne’s extended lockdowns, but said his comedy is as strong as ever.

“While Melbourne was locked down, Dave Hughes was trending. He went viral during the pandemic and managed to get himself in trouble with pretty much everyone. Luckily, Hughesy is zen. He is at peace with the chaos he creates, knowing that from great turmoil comes even greater material,” Prime Video said.

“Hughesy has always attacked his comedy like a man with nothing to lose. A week hasn’t gone by in the last 25 years that Hughesy hasn’t done stand-up, whether headlining an iconic theatre or jumping up at a tiny club. What has worried him by day becomes fodder for that night’s material. To him, every audience is a great crowd and they should never forget that.”
