Sydney singer-songwriter Dean Lewis has unveiled a gut-wrenching new single with ‘Be Alright’. A frank and fairly candid meditation on romantic betrayal and moving past pain, Lewis delivers his lyrics above a relatively sparse, stripped back instrumentation. Punctuated with a swelling, hopeful chorus, ‘Be Alright’ is the kind of slow-burning balladry that’s equal parts uplifting and devastating. It’s not difficult to see how Lewis draws influence from the likes of musical hero Noel Gallagher and Richard Ashcroft.
“Be Alright is actually written about a few different relationships, some were mine and some from friends,” says Lewis of the track. “I took little bits and pieces from each experience and combined them in to one song. For people worried about me cause the song is so sad – trust me, I’m ok… the song is actually about hope and knowing that in the end things will work out, surrounding yourself with good people.”
This new single – the first taste from Lewis’ upcoming debut album – follows a monumental couple of years for Lewis, whose debut EP Same Kind Of Different in 2017 saw a number of hits, including ‘Need You Now’ and ‘Lose My Mind’ – both of which were certified gold.
Infectious, multi-platinum lead single ‘Waves’ was championed by triple j, Spotify and Apple Music upon its release, eventually going on to be the second biggest Australian selling single of the year. It created a splash on network television, appearing on the soundtracks for programs such as Suits, Riverdale and Grey’s Anatomy. Lewis would go on to grace stages both at home and abroad, playing headline shows and festival slots across Australia and the US. Earlier this year, Lewis released a music video for track ‘Chemicals’.
