Oh man. We called it. 2017 is, indeed, shaping up to be the year of the Australian Pizza Wars.
First, Domino’s Australia announced that in order to continue letting their menu evolve with these crazy, gluten-hating times, they would be discontinuing a range of pizzas – including one of the four pillars of pizza itself: the mighty, mighty Margherita.
Not surprisingly, this sparked an internet blaze, which Pizza Hut gleefully stoked last week by announcing that they would be doubling down on the (mighty, mighty) Margherita by giving away 10,000 of them, across the country, across the weekend. It was a glorious shot, and of course we wrote about it.
Shortly after, the Communications Specialist from Domino’s emailed me, with an update.
“After public outcry earlier this week, Domino’s has today announced the Company will keep our much-loved Margherita Pizza on our menus across Australia.”
Good result.
Now, Domino’s have announced their new Quality Fresh menu (the reason for the initial Margherita discontinuation), and to celebrate/taunt Pizza Hut, they are giving away 10,001 free premium pizzas from this afternoon (Wednesday, August 9) at 4pm. You’ll note this is one pizza more than Pizza Hut offered up.
