Drew Barrymore has expressed remorse for working with disgraced director Woody Allen on his 1996 film Everyone Says I Love You.
Barrymore sat down with Dylan Farrow in conversation on Monday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. Farrow was invited onto the show to discuss her new novel, Hush, trauma, and the fallout of the recent HBO docuseries, Allen v. Farrow — which explored Farrow’s allegations of sexual abuse against Woody Allen, her adoptive father.
The four-part series re-examined a decades-old allegation that the Oscar-winning filmmaker molested Dylan when she was seven years old. The series features extensive interviews with Dylan, her adoptive mother and Allen’s former partner Mia Farrow, and friends and family close to the allegations.
During the interview, Barrymore spoke about her involvement in Everyone Says I Love You, filmed four years after the allegations against Allen first came to light. Barrymore acknowledged that at the time there was “no higher career calling card than to work with Woody Allen.”
Barrymore went on to detail that having children forced her to reckon with choosing to work with Allen. “Then I had children, and it changed me because I realized that I was one of the people who was basically gaslit into not looking at a narrative beyond what I was being told,” she said.
“And I see what is happening in the industry now, and that is because of you making that brave choice.”
Farrow responded, “I’m trying not to cry right now. It’s so meaningful, because it’s so easy for me to say, ‘Of course you shouldn’t work with him. He’s a jerk. He’s a monster.’ I just find it incredibly brave and incredibly generous that you would say to me that my story and what I went through was important enough to reconsider that.”
