When news broke that Western Sydney Lebanese charcoal chicken dynasty El Jannah was preparing to open up shop in Newtown, I was heartbroken.

Though objectively convenient for me, as an inner-city dweller, to have arms reach access to their heavenly pickles. It was hard to grapple with the knowledge that this sacred, toum-laden realm was traversing to a place where TNs are donned with ironic self-awareness, and not with the intention of announcing yourself a hard cunt.

Thankfully, balance has been restored. El Jannah are coming home, baby. The empire is opening up their first ever drive-thru store in Western Sydney’s Smithfield (3/16 Smithfield Rd, to be exact.)

The grand opening will take place on August 8th. So clear ya schedule, there’s gonna be a Saturday arvo feed for the ages. You’ll be able to cop all the beloved classics, like charcoal chicken, shawarma, holy pink pickles, skewer platters, hot rolls, burgers, falafel plates, and the treasure trove of sauces.

If you don’t have a car (what are you doing in Western Sydney?) the Smithfield shop will welcome walk-in customers with open, socially-distanced arms.

Earlier this year, Frangos – the significantly less god-tier chook joint— opened up their first drive-thru joint in Edmonson Park. Perhaps El Jannah’s decision to open up a drive-thru of their own can be seen as a direct response to this? A way to ensure that the discourse of which chicken joint is the superior chicken joint continues? Frango’s may have their chilli sauce but their chicken holds not a flame to the scorched glory of El Jannah’s.

El Jannah‘s Smithfield drive-thru will be open for your enjoyment at 3/16 Smithfield Road, Smithfield from 10am on Saturday, August 8. If you want more flame-grilled goodness in your inbox, feel free to chuck a subscribe to our Food & Drink Observer to stay in the loop.
