Elton John has condemned the hypocrisy of the Vatican after their controversial ruling on same-sex unions this week.

As per Billboard, the Vatican’s orthodoxy office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, issued a two-page decree that was approved by Pope Francis on Monday, March 15th. The decree stated that the Catholic Church didn’t ultimately see same-sex union as part of God’s plan, saying that God “cannot bless sin.” They did still maintain that they welcomed and blessed gay people.

Elton – a proud and famous member of the LGBTQ+ community – was unsurprisingly unhappy with the Vatican’s statement. The singer highlighted the hypocrisy of the Vatican investing in his 2019 biopic Rocketman and then going on to issue such a contradictory decree. That film focused on Elton’s sexuality, including his coming out as a gay man before going on to show his marriage to David Furnish. Elton and Furnish have been married since 2014, when same-sex marriage became legal in England and Wales.

“How can the Vatican refuse to bless gay marriages because they ‘are sin’, yet happily make a profit from investing millions in Rocketman – a film which celebrates my finding happiness from my marriage to David?? #hypocrisy,” Elton said on Twitter, making sure to tag the Vatican News and Pope Francis in it.
