NSW State Champion Emiliano Tissera maintained his successful record with a crowning victory at PCYC Boxing’s King of the Ring tournament on Sunday April 10th.

Fighting in the 57kg weight class, Emiliano Tissera, of Joe’s Boxing Club, Five Dock, beat Battaglia Boxing’s Harrison Knew in the elite class final. This followed Tissera’s victory over Emmanuel Shemeza of Team Akkaway in the King of the Ring semi-final one day previous.

Tissera’s triumph at King of the Ring—held at PCYC Blacktown and hosted by Boxing Australia, New South Wales—comes just four months after he won the NSW PCYC State Boxing Championship. At the time of his state championship victory, the Argentinian-born Tissera remained undefeated after 35 fights of his amateur boxing career. Since then, he’s continued to raise the stakes.

In the lead up to King of the Ring, Tissera trained with Hussein Fayad at the Sydney gym of George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr, the undisputed WBA, WBO and IBF lightweight world champion. Tissera also trained with incipient professional lightweight, Harry Garside, who won bronze for Australia at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

After his state championship and King of the Ring victories, Tissera is targeting a spot on the 2024 Australian Olympic team. “Emiliano has been training very hard to get a place in the Australian team with a view to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024,” said Tissera’s father and head coach, Alejandro Tissera.

In addition to Alejandro, Emiliano’s team includes Joe Walker of Joe’s Boxing, physical trainer Dario Capa and an assortment of experts in nutrition and psychology. They’re all eager to see Emiliano go professional by the end of 2022. But gaining a spot on the Australian team is the number one priority.

“I am determined to do everything, and I am going to achieve it thanks to the whole team that accompanies me,” Emiliano said in a statement shared with The Brag.

The Tisseras moved to Australia in 2019. Alejandro Tissera is a Chinese martial arts master and kick boxing champion, and Emiliano has been kick boxing for as long as he’s been able to walk. After winning the Argentinian national kick boxing championship at the age of 12, Alejandro suggested a switch to boxing so that Emiliano could improve his chances of becoming an Olympic athlete.

Emiliano had won 25 consecutive boxing matches by the time he’d turned 18, which was sufficient to expedite the move to Australia. “Emiliano has worked very hard since he started in this sport in 2012 and now, at 22, he is going through the best moment of sporting maturity,” said Alejandro.

Having secured the NSW state championship belt and King of the Ring gold ring, Tissera’s team are confident that Emiliano is the best 57kg elite amateur boxer in NSW. He’ll begin fighting in other states next month.

“I am working very hard now and I am proud of my team that pushes me every day,” Emiliano said. “It is not easy to maintain the elite level but I enjoy it.”

He added, “I work hard to face the new challenges. Thanks to Australia for receiving me in the best way and my top professional sparring partners.”
