Eric Dane, who plays McSteamy in Grey’s Anatomy, revealed whether a certain Euphoria character was named after Grey’s McDreamy character.

Eric Dane’s crossover between Mark Sloan in Grey’s Anatomy Cal Jacobs in Euphoria has fans speculating at even the smallest details after Season 2 of Euphoria. After enough fan speculation on Twitter, Entertainment Weekly felt obliged to ask Eric Dane about the possible connection in this interview with the San Francisco-born actor.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I do have one question to get over it real quick. We see Derek again this episode and I have to ask, because social media’s asking, is Cal’s friend being named Derek a nod to Grey’s?

DANE: Oh, oh, okay. I get it, I get it, I get it. I can’t imagine that that’s — that would just be weird.

[Laughs] Complete coincidence.

DANE: Yeah.

Dane appeared to be confused by the question at first, seemingly baffled by the shaky connection that wasn’t cementing in his mind, before realizing what fans were asking. Dane’s answer was quick to point out that it would be weird to make that connection between the shows once he realized the nature of the question. Jacob Elordi, who plays Nate Jacobs in Euphoria, was even more so confused saying, “I don’t even know what that means,” in response to the question.

Euphoria Season 2 has recently aired its finale episode and is now available to stream on HBO Max in its entirety.
