Sometimes a viral trend is so stunning that even a major film production company approves of it – that’s how popular the new Minions TikTok trend is.

Avid fans of the Despicable Me franchise have been going to see Minions: The Rise of Gru wearing full suits, taking the film comically serious. It’s truly something to behold – large groups of young people filling half a cinema, looking like Men in Black cosplayers.

Even Universal, the company responsible for distributing Minions: Rise of Gru, has publicly approved of the rend. “To everyone showing up to @Minions in suits: we see you and we love you,” the official Universal Pictures Twitter account gushed.

Not everyone’s been happy with the trend though. One participating TikToker actually got removed from a cinema after the police were called. The actual police. One cinema manager went so far as to issue a warning that anyone in “formal attire” would not be admitted to screenings of the film. Spoilsports.

The Minions have been inescapable in recent weeks. The pint-sized yellow creatures took over Dunder Mifflin for a funny crossover promo with The Office, recreating famous moments from the iconic sitcom.

Gru himself, Steve Carell, also submitted an earnest audition tape to join beloved Aussie children’s group The Wiggles, aiming to pull on the hallowed yellow jersey previously worn by Emma Watkins.

Awkwardness ensued, however, when he realised that The Wiggles had already found a replacement for Watkins in Tsehay Hawkins, who joined the lineup last year. The incessant promo has really paid off, with Minions: Rise of Gru absolutely dominating the box office.

Minions: The Rise of Gru is the sequel to 2015’s Minions. It tells the “origin story of how a 12-year-old Gru first met his iconic Minions, forged cinema’s most despicable crew and faced off against the most unstoppable criminal force ever assembled,” as the official description says.
