September sees the premiere of a certain fantasy series that wants to rule them all, but there’s plenty of other excellent titles coming to Prime Video next month.

After months of curious buildup, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power finally debuts on Prime Video on September 1st. Set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings,  the series covers all the major events of Middle-earth’s Second Age, including the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron.

Teaser trailers have shown promise but the pressure’s really on The Rings of Power: it’s heading into a fierce streaming battle with HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, while it’s also the most expensive television series ever made

Away from Middle-earth, Sean Baker’s latest exhilarating slice of Americana filmmaking, Red Rocket, comes to Prime Video on September 6th. The plot follows a struggling porn star who returns to his backwater Texan town and soon begins a relationship with an adolescent girl.

The comedy-drama showcased Baker’s impressive ability to get the most out of his actors: the film marked a career-reviving turn for Scary Movie franchise alum Simon Rex, while it provided a breakout role for Suzanna Son, who’ll soon be seen in The Idol opposite The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp.

On September 16th, the US remake of acclaimed Austrian psychological horror film Goodnight Mommy premieres on the streaming platform. When twin brothers arrive home to find their mother’s face covered in surgical bandages and her behaviour altered, they begin to suspect the women beneath the coverings might not actually be their mother.

Naomi Watts leads the cast of of the film, and she’ll be hoping it’s received better than 2007’s Funny Games, Michael Haneke’s US remake of his 1997 film of the same name, which was was widely derided by critics.
