Adele’s Australian tour sent the country into a ticket-buying frenzy earlier this year, but if new quotes from the singer are to be believed, that may have been our last chance to see her on Australian soil – or potentially at all.
With her world tour wrapping up in London this week after almost a year-and-a-half on the road, The Sun reports that the singer included a handwritten note in the programme further explaining her views on touring, and suggesting that the global jaunt may be her last one.
“So this is it after 15 months on the road and 18 months of 25 we are at the end,” she begins. “We have taken this tour across UK and Ireland, throughout Europe, all over America and I finally got to go to Australia and New Zealand too.
“Touring is a peculiar thing, it doesn’t suit me particularly well. I’m a real homebody and I get so much joy in the small things. Plus, I’m dramatic and have a terrible history of touring. Until now that is!
“I’ve done 119 shows and these last four will take me up to 123, it has been hard but an absolute thrill and pleasure. I only ever did this tour for you and to hopefully have an impact on you the way that some of my favourite artists have had on me live.
“And I wanted my final shows to be in London because I don’t know if I’ll ever tour again and so I want my last time to be at home.”
Adding further credence are the quotes she gave the crowd.
“I will always write music and I will always put it out,” she said “And I hope that you’re always here. I might never see you again at a live show. Who knows. But I will remember this for the rest of my life.”
As tour promoter Michael Coppel told The Advertiser, it took a huge amount of effort to even coax the world-conquering performer to Australia in the first place, and a second time around may prove an impossible task.
“She’s never been known as an enthusiastic tourer,” he said. “She wants to be in the studio and producing music, but I think she’s recognised the demand to see her is so extreme, given the huge success and record sales and so forth, that she was persuaded that she had to do a world tour.
“She’s done UK and Europe and North America and we were fortunate enough to get her to come to Australia and New Zealand,” he said, adding that the local leg was the result of “a year of negotiations”.
With her touring obligations seemingly fulfilled, Adele may be very content to give it a miss for years to come – and potentially the remainder of her career.
