Facebook and its apps, including Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Oculus, are experiencing a worldwide outage that has lasted more than five hours.

The outage began at around 2:30am AEDT, and according to Downdetector, the sites still remain inaccessible. Facebook’s internal system used by employees has also gone dark.

The company has not specified what caused the outage. On Twitter, Facebook spokesperson Andy Stone said: “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any inconvenience.”

Journalist Sheera Frenkel, wrote that the network outage was so profound that Facebook staff had been unable to enter their own company buildings because their passes were not working.

The time is nigh for all those that have been praying for an internet apocalypse.
