Heads up! There’s a new phone scam going around, and they’re pretty slick. With this new scam, criminals are impersonating the Australian Tax Office – they’ve already stolen around $190,000 in just two weeks.

So this is how it’s all going down:

The scam involves a three-way phone call.

First, the scammers will ring you pretending to be from the tax office. They’ll tell you that a large bill needs to be paid immediately.

If you challenge the claim, the scammer will then loop an associate con artist into the call. Scammer #2 will then pretend to be your tax agent and will confirm that there’s a bill that needs to be paid.

It’s been reported that in some cases the scammers have gone on to threaten police action if the bill isn’t payed.

In some cases, the scammers falsely threaten legal or police action if the bill is not paid.
